The 2025 Salmon River salmon run is quickly winding down here in Upstate New York, and overall it’s been a solid season. Even with low water flows and bright sun almost every day, the fish showed up and gave us plenty of action. We had some incredible mornings when the migration was steady, and though the bite slowed once the sun hit the water, there were still plenty of opportunities for those willing to work for it. This week, the first steelhead have started to arrive in really good numbers — and the size of these early fish has been impressive. Fall Steelhead
Terry with one of many on a recent trip Steelhead season is in full swing now and with the recent snow on the ground and flows increasing its setting up for a great rest of the season. Swinging flies has been pretty consistent now with number of fish in the river. I'd say 90% of my clients are changing over to swinging flies and taking on the challenge of trying to catch a steelhead the hardest way to catch one. Nothing like swinging down a run with a fresh blanket of snow on the ground.

2021 Here We Go
With 2020 behind us lets hope 2021 is better for all of us. I want to thank each and every client who fished hard and worked for every bite, you guys are awesome. After a long fall season with low water, crowds and less fish around then we all would like it’s nice to take a break for a bit. My calendar for next fall is getting pretty full with everyone rebooking the same days, so if you want to book for the fall I highly suggest not waiting to long. Fall Run
The Fall Salmon run is well under way and despite low water it has been pretty good. There has been some good pushes of fish over the past week with some brown trout and steelhead mixed in. It's almost time to breakout the two handers and start swinging, hopefully mother nature starts dumping some rain us soon. Open Dates - November 22, December 13,19,20,27. Trout Fishing
TROUT Fishing on the Ausable has been very good recently, nymphing during the day or chasing hatches for some dry fly fun towards evening have been productive. The streams of central NY are fishing good as well and the Salmon River received a small stocking of some Browns that have been fun to catch especially on trout spey rods. Guided Trips & Fishing
NYS has put a temporary ban on guiding in New York under the "PAUSE Executive Order" until further notice. While we have already stopped doing any trips before this went into effect for everyone's safety, we're still are booking trips for the fall. This it a tough time for all of us and I've been reaching to clients about their dates booked and deposits and I want to thank all my clients who have rescheduled or have been generous to allow me to keep the deposit. Swinging Into The New Year
As we come to a close of 2019 looking back it has been a great year. Maybe not in fish numbers, but in fishing experiences. More and more clients are enjoying swinging flies with two hander's each season and are working hard on their casting and skills to fish thru a run move effectively. And they are just enjoying being out there unplugged from work and devices. Enjoying time on the water with friends, just taking it all in, as we all know, life is too short not to live everyday to its fullest. Salmon Season Is Underway
The Fall salmon run is well underway now. It started off good but the weather was too summer like this past week and slowed things down. Hopefully more Fall like weather will return soon because steelhead will hopefully start showing up once the water cools down. Who's ready to catch some steelhead?? The NYS Salmon River Fish Hatchery will be holding the 23rd Annual Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House and Family Day on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information this event click here.
