Trout Spey – Why Try It

By |February 28th, 2023|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

You’ll catch fish in places you never thought they were before It never ceases to blow my mind where the occasional bite or hook up may come from. Generally in dry fly or indicator fishing, we have all been taught to focus on certain types of water depending on what we are trying to accomplish. While it is true that trout favor different types of water throughout the year, Trout Spey has shown me that we may have been overlooking great fishing opportunities. Some of these instances have revealed themselves while trying to make a long cast to other side of the river. Instead of getting the bite on the bank, I’ve gotten the flash, bite, or hook up on in the middle of the fast water and even in rapids and wave trains. It has taught me to not only think about the surface currents but the depressions, currents, and structure underneath what we can see on the surface. You will develop skills for fishing anadromous species I realize not all people are going to get a chance or have the time and resources to fish for steelhead, salmon, or browns but what’s wrong with dreaming? For those who do have the option or invitation, who would want to show up on a dream trip and have no spey casting experience? No one. Trout Spey techniques have mostly all come from the world of traditional spey casting. Having even a basic understanding of the fundamentals before you get on a plane is only going to amount to more time fishing rather than learning when you get to wherever and whenever you’re going. It’s fun! Whether or not you are seasoned angler, or a novice [...]

Trout fishing is pretty good on the West Branch Ausable as well as the West Canada Creek.  Euro Nymphing, Dry Fly or swinging flies with a trout spey are all producing plenty of fish. Looking to book a trip, give me a call, text or shoot me a email.

Trout Fishing

By |June 9th, 2020|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

TROUT Fishing on the Ausable has been very good recently, nymphing during the day or chasing hatches for some dry fly fun towards evening have been productive. The streams of central NY are fishing good as well and the Salmon River received  a small stocking of some Browns that have been fun to catch especially on trout spey rods. SALMON & STEELHEAD September thru early December dates are almost all gone if you haven't booked yours, don't wait.  Call, Text or Email.  518-495-2965 Paul

Ausable Report

By |June 1st, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: , , , , , , , |

The West Branch of the Ausable has been fishing pretty good  recently.  Water flows are dropping to summer time lows, water temps are mid 50's-60 still.  Tight line nymphing has been the most productive technique by far, getting down and dirty with nymphs has produced some incredible client days along with some quality fish. Best patterns nymphing have been: Frenchie, Pat's Rubber Leg Stone, Sexy Walts worm and a Rainbow Warrior in sizes 8 to 16.   Looking to book a trip, contact us here.

Trout Fishing Report

By |June 9th, 2015|Categories: Reports|Tags: , , , , , |

I was up on the Ausable River in Wilmington over the past week and the fishing was great, plenty of hatches coming off for the dry fly angler from mid day on and nymphing was good all day. Here are my clients tight line nymphing thru some very productive pocket water on the Ausable.  A #16 Frenchie and #8 Rubber Leg Stone Fly are a great set up on the Ausable, this nice Brown got fooled by the frenchie. I have limited dates left for trout fishing trips, if you would like to book one give me a call or click on the contact tab to e-mail me.

Big Water

By |April 14th, 2014|Categories: Reports|Tags: , , , |

High water on all tribs continues as daytime temperatures continue to be in the mid 70's for Monday. The runoff will slow down a little Tuesday night as the the night time low is going to be in the low 20's, but then back to spring like the rest of the week. Brown trout fishing on the lake has been really good along the Lake Ontario shoreline. I have May 4 open as well as May 10th for Steelhead trips. Give me a call 315-298-3949 or click here to book a trip.
