The Salmon run on the Salmon River is off to a slower start then what everyone had hoped for this fall. So far we have not seen a big run, everyday its a steady trickle to small pods coming thru the Douglaston Salmon Run section of the river. As you can see by Jay's smile it only takes a few in the net to make it all worth it. Still looking for last minute dates?? I only have the Friday October 2nd open due to a cancellation for Salmon. Who's ready for the coho run?? Will you time it right when they decide to run? Just in (9/15) - One of the DSR river patrollers just reported that he saw at least 100 Coho and King down in the Estuary at the lower property line.
Salmon season is just around the corner. Hopefully we should see a good run based on statistics and hope mother nature is in our favor this fall. A good source was fishing in the Douglaston Salmon Run Sunday and saw a few salmon moving thru. Could we have another year with a early run? Lee's smile say's it all. What we lacked in salmon this year, the steelhead are making up for it. If you’re on any social media sites for the Salmon River area you will see a lot of the big steelhead being caught this year. There are plenty of steelhead in the river, they just don't want to bite like we want them too. The water temp is just too warm for them to act like they should. The plus side, there's a cold front on the way. Just like there are plenty of fish, there are plenty of fisherman along the banks of the Salmon River. Respect each other's space and don't crowd in on other anglers space and have a enjoyable day fishing, isn't that why were out there???
Fishing remains slow and everyone has theories to where the fish are or even if we are going to get a decent return of fish this year. Is it because of the flood in 2010? Low water and lack of eggs at the hatchery in 2011?? The cold winter and colder then normal lake temperatures this year?? Or 60% of last years fish at the hatchery last year were two year olds (this years fish) Or all the above. Only time will tell. As I type this there has been some fish showing up at the mouth staged in front. On the plus side there are some Steelhead in the river, if you try to target them you could be rewarded like Blake here in the picture above.
This season is a wrap and what a great season it was. The Salmon run started out early in August and was incredible all the way thru October with some really big kings! Steelhead season started off with a bang too and continued right thru the fall. Those early fish in the DSR made for some great takes for my clients swinging flies. Winter fishing was good if you wanted to do battle with Old Man Winter - Me, I must be getting older, I can't take those really cold days anymore. With the long winter came a extended spring season and as I type this there is still plenty of fish to be caught in the river. We saw some insane numbers come to the net and anyway you wanted to catch them. To top it all off I had Great clients/Friends, so what more could a guide ask for!! Looking forward to seeing everyone this coming season! Just think Salmon Season is only 3 1/2 months away!!! Tight Lines, Paul
