I spent the last 3 days fishing and hanging out with Ed Ward, Mike McCune & Scott O’Donnell and what a time it was.

What a great bunch of guys, Ed, Mike and Scott were really impressed with the Salmon River.   The were all about the experience, being from the west coast they had never caught or seen a chub, they thought that was the coolest thing.  They ran around looking at the ground cover everywhere we went and all the different trees we have, On the west coast along their rivers either the woods are so thick you can’t walk thru them or the tress are so big, nothing grows under them.

Seeing these guys fish our river was awesome.  They showed me alot about casting, but what was even better was what they showed me about fishing skagit lines, different presentations and flies that will not only help me a better angler for Steelhead but Salmon too.  All this combined will help a great deal when guiding next season, I can’t wait.

Here’s a few pictures from the weekend -

Most Spey fisherman get stuck in their ways fishing, they think that if they make a cast and the fly is swinging it will do the rest all by itself.  What you need to do is make your fly swim properly, How??  Steer the line with the rod tip is key.  If your line isn’t doing the right thing, you fly isn’t doing the right thing.

I recently got a new waterproof video camera, here’s a clip of a swung fly swimming in the current.

Well fishing isn’t what it normally would be this time of the year, Clients are working hard for each fish.  There is plenty of fish in the river, getting them to bite is the problem.  Heavy fishing pressure, Low water (which steelhead HATE) are making it tough going some days. You can expect 6-8 bites landing 3 or 4 right now by putting your time in.  Best suggestion is to be on the water at daylight, fish til 11 or so, then come back out about 5 and fish til dark.

After a few weeks of having my new Willie Drift Boat, I have to say it’s Awesome.  Customer’s say:  ”It’s very comfortable”, “Easy to fish from” and “Plenty of room”, what more can I add.  Here’s a couple of on the water pictures of it.

Fishing has been good with the old saying “Being in the right spot at the right time” being true.  The bite was soft over the weekend with low water heavy fishing pressure and air temps 84 one day and 40 the next sure didn’t help.

Here’s a few fish from the last few days.

I just had Sunday April 18th open up, if you want to get out on the water one last time before the season is over, here’s your chance at some really good fishing.  Give me a call 315-298-3949 or e-mail me to book a trip.

The fishing remains decent, covering a lot of water and staying away from the crowds is the key thing.  Over the last few days my clients have been hitting 6 to 10 fish each trip out, look for the fishing to be on fire very soon.  Looks like we are about 2 weeks ahead of normal with the water temp, now at 38 degrees.  The Hatchery is going to start the Egg Collection this week,  if you get a chance get over there and watch it if you have never seen it before.

Here are the open dates I have left - April 3,4,16,18 & 26th.
