I made it out to fish with some friends on Saturday, We started out on the Salmon River fish one spot for awhile with no success and the slush became worse so we decided to head over to the Oswego River. John was the first to hookup

There has been a good push of bigger fish moving thru the lower sections over the past week or so. The fish are from the top to the bottom, if you are not hitting them keep moving til you do. I have been fishing eggs under a float and this seems to be what they want. Egg sacks in Pale Yellow, White and Pink have been the best. Most fish have been coming from Pockets and Edges along the faster water. Egg patterns and Stonefly nymph's will be a good fly choice.

March 23, 2005

Not much new to report on the fishing. Seems like its one here and one there and everyone is working hard for them. Some fish are active on redds at night and drop back into the deeper water during the day. With the low flow's, work the deep water adjacent to the gravel throughly before moving on to the next spot.Alot of the Creeks are starting to open up but don't have alot of run-off in the to bring the fish up them yet. Oswego River has been producing some fish in the Harbor and up dam the dam when the flow goes back up, watch the water flow gauges to determine where you want to be fishing over there.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!! Now is the time to Book your Winter Steelhead and Spring trips. Prime dates still open, Contact me for open dates. The forecast is calling for rain, lets see if we get it (fingers crossed). If we do get any rain, fish the lower section of the river for fresh Chrome. The fishing on the Salmon River hasn't changed over the past few days. Anglers covering alot of water and fishing hard are producing 2-3 hook-ups. There has been heavy fishing pressure in the Altmar area. Best place to start would be trying the mid section around RT 81 up to RT2A.

Now is the time to Book your Winter Steelhead and Spring trips. Prime dates still open, Contact me for open dates. Overall the fishing has been slow the past few days. The lower end has had a good presence of fresh fish the last few days. Make sure you are covering all the water and if you think your fishing over some prime real-state (and you know Mr.Steelhead is in there) keep fishing it. The Altmar to Pineville section has the most fishing pressure, try fishing lower in the river to find the biter's. Fishing from the village up to the Sportsman's pool would be a good place to start. Oswego River - Water flow has been up and down and with this so has the fishing. There is a good mix of Steelhead and Browns.

Now is the time to Book your Winter Steelhead and Spring trips. Prime dates still open. Contact me for open dates.Nothing much new to report, the fishing has remained slow with 2-3 hookups being good day. The Upper end still seems to have the most fish, but the fish in the lower end are uneducated. (HINT) Keep moving and cover alot of water has been the best thing the past few days.Fishing to the west has slowed, All of the Creek's all need rain. Hopefully soon, maybe the forecast will be right with some rain expected of the weekend.

The fishing on the Salmon River this weekend was fair, there was heavy fishing pressure in the upper section and I saw only a few fish landed. There seemed to be more anglers on Sunday then on Saturday thats usually the other way around. On Saturday I fished with Josh and John from VT, they fish hard all day and had a hook up in each of the spots we fished, none landed though. We fine tuned their drifting technic's and showed them every Slot, Run, Seam and Holding spots in the upper section for many more days of fishing on there own.. The only other fish we saw hooked was by a "Guide" fishing and handing the rod off ( I don't get that..What did the Client learn from this??) Sunday's highlight was running into Jim Rusher at the Pineville parking lot. Had a few laughs about old times. The Steelhead are still in all the Hard (Fast) Water, they are spreadout throught the river with the majority of fish up top. Keep moving and cover alot of water.Best Fly Patterns: Egg Patterns, Stonefly's and Nymph's.Egg Sacks in Blue and Pink seemed to be working the best.

Book your Fall Steelhead and Brown Trout trips now. Prime dates still open. Contact me for open dates.Salmon River- The Altmar area has a decent number of Steelhead spreadout throughout. Most angler's in the top section seem to be fishing for Salmon. In the lower end of the river fishing was ok with a few Steelhead landed and a few Brown Trout caught. Oak Orchard- I heard mixed reports from other guides who have been over there late last week. Water level is at a great level so far, and fish are spreadout. You just need to be in the right spot. Some female Browns have shown up in the upper section of the creek. Other creeks in the area have low water flow with a few Browns in them.

The Lower end fish well yesterday with a pod of Steelhead moving into the river. The Altmar area is producing a few Steelhead too.The Oswego River has a good number of fresh Salmon and also good numbers of Browns and Steelhead mixed in. The water level is very wadeable too.Oak Orchard has a good numbers of Brown Trout (mostly males) thru the whole river. There are a few Salmon around too. Other area creeks have very little water flow in them with a few fish in them.

Its Time for TROUT!!!Salmon River- The Salmon season is approaching the very end. There are a some Salmon still in decent shape but for the most part the season has come to the end. Steelhead fishing is slow, with a few here and one there type of fishing, no concentration of them in any spot. Keep moving is the key right now to finding Steelhead. Now that that fall is in full swing we need to switch over to Steelhead and Brown Trout. As the leaves are falling, cooler tempatures are upon us and the Time will be changing back, its time to target the egg eating machines.. The streams west of Oswego will soon be loaded with plenty of fish as long as we get some rain. The Creeks that get water from other sources have fish in them now. Oak Orchard has some good numbers of Salmon around with decent numbers of Male Brown Trout. Look for the females to start showing up soon.

Well its that time of the year when we are in transition from Salmon fishing to Steelhead fishing. The Salmon fishing in the upper end continues and some fresh Salmon still entering the river in small numbers. Everyday there have been a few Steelhead entering the river but no real big pod anywhere yet. This is a good time to get ready for the Steelhead season, below are a few simple things to check before heading out on the first trip of the season. Here are just a few simple things that get overlooked.Check your line, Flylines for cracks and cuts. Mono, refill your spools with fresh line.Make you have all your tools. Nippers, Pliers, Knot tying tool, Leader Material, Pocket Knife or a Leatherman type of tool ( I always need a screwdriver or i'm asked for one alot) and Split shot. A successfull Steelhead season often begins at the local tackle shop or Fly tying bench.Have the proper clothing is very important as we all know. Simplify your fly boxes.. We all have been there with 3 boxes of eggs patterns, 3 boxes of Nymph's and 2 misc boxes of flies we never use. Tryout the Scientific Anglers waterproof boxes, you can change the inserts and put in a divider too. Believe me in 2 or 3 boxes you can jam all the flies you'll every need in them.

The Salmon fishing in the lower end of the river has slowed, with a few Salmon moving thru each day most angler's have switched over for Steelhead. The upper end of the river is still loaded with fish, all the gravel sections have fish and the deeper water adjacent to the gravel. Steelhead fishing is picking up on a daily basis, with more showing up daily. Good reports of Brown Trout mixed in too. The leaves are starting to be the big problem for the next week or so, hopefully we'll get some well needed rain too.High /Low (°F)Precip. %TonightOct 20Showers42°50 %Thu Oct 21Few Showers54°/40°30 %Fri Oct 22Partly Cloudy57°/36°20 %Sat Oct 23Partly Cloudy55°/42°20 %Sun Oct 24Showers56°/41°30 %

Fall Steelhead Season is approaching fast, Now is the time to book your trip. The fishing remains good from top to bottom. From Altmar to Pineville the fish are on just about every piece of gravel. We started out in one spot Saturday morning, ( My first time floating up top in a few weeks) so going into it blind we had roughly 50 fish in front of us on the gravel after getting surrounded by bank angler's and having plenty of action we left fish to find fish. Boy did we, every spot we stopped there was plenty of fish.A decent number of Steelhead are now starting to show up. Noticed a few lying in the fast water below the Gravel area's. Best Salmon fishing of the year is now. There were good numbers of Salmon on the move between the Sportsman's pool and the Secret Hole on Saturday so these fish will be on the gravel in the next few days.

The fishing in the lower today slowed to a steady trickle of fish moving thru. There are a fair number of Steelhead mixed in the lower section and heard some reports of Steelhead being caught in the upper end. This year Salmon season is far from over and looks like it will last into November. The fishing is good from the top to bottom of the river and you could also target just Steelhead now as there is a good number of them showing up daily. Hopefully the new ONE Steelhead limit will make this years Steelhead season the best in years. Some reports from out west show that some Large Male Brown Trout are starting to show up in the Creeks. The best fishing for them will be in a couple of weeks.

Fishing picked up in the lower river yesterday with a trickle of fish to keep everyone interested. Still lots of fish at the mouth of the river, Guides doing night time trips at the mouth are doing well there. Upriver the fishing is getting tougher with all the fishing pressure and fish being taken. The Upper and Lower Flyzones still have good numbers of fish in them. The most fish are from the Sportsmans Hole to Altmar and are spreadout. Fish are starting to get on Redds, try swinging Egg Sucking Leech's to the males around the Redd they will be protective of the redd.

The fishing in the lower river still remains slow, there was a small movement of fish in the early morning. The best place to be is in the upper section of the river. There are good numbers of fish in spots with heavy fishing pressure also. The Flyzone's have good numbers of fish in them, but very crowded with people. There Biological clock will soon tell the fish they have to go up the river. But when???The fish that were in 30-40 ft of water yesterday moved into 10-15ft of water and were jumping and splashing on the surface in front of the Salmon River but didnt bite well. The weather is calling for cooler temps at night and some rain forecasted this week. This will help cool the river down at the mouth of the river.

Fishing remains about the same as all week, a few fish have been entering the river daily. The water temp has jumped up to 76 degrees, with this please take the extra time to revieve the fish in the warm water. Lake Captains I have been talking to are doing really well, in the am they are trolling right out of the mouth and getting them. The majority of the fish are in 50 foot range. They have been seeing alot of fish out of temp in the lake, this means they are ready to run up the river.Prime river fishing is right around the corner, and water increase's will pull fish into the river. I still have a few dates left of Salmon, if interested call or e-mail me as they wont last long..

August 22, 2004

Fishing remains the same as yesterday. A small number of fish entered the river and with a small number of anglers fishing it makes for a good day. Water temp is in the low 60's, which is really good for this time of year. Just goes to show we haven't had much of a summer. I will update when the fishing picks up. I still have some open dates for Salmon season, Prime Steelhead dates are filling up along with Brown Trout trips out to the west, these dates are very limited and will go quickly in the next few weeks. If your interested in catching some really nice Brown Trout or maybe looking for that one for the wall now is the time to book.

Salmon Season Opener.

Today the DSR opened for the season, When we arrived mid morning and started walking the lower end It was great to see the splashing of Salmon coming toward me. We saw maybe a dozen fish on the move in the lower section and saw a few others landed. The water temp was 66 degrees, thats a good sign for the early fish that have entered the river.Don't forget to click on Salmon, Steelhead and Trout pics on the home page for more info on each type of fish.

The water level is down to 900 CFS Til Friday midnight. Recent water level changes and water temperature changes have put the fish off the bite. River fishing has been really tough, with one trout being a good day. Everyone knew it wouldn't last long once the water went down for a few days and extremely heavy fishing pressure last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lake fishing for Brown Trout is really good right now along the shoreline. The Walleye fishing is good in the Oswego and Black rivers.I just want to thank everyone for a great season and looking foward to seeing you all in the fall. If you haven't booked your fall dates yet, e-mail me ASAP as there booking fast.

On Saturday there were not as many boats out I would have thought. I fished with Dalton and Karen part of a group with Tom Burke. We mixed it up some with some casting and some backtrolling. We had two bites on plugs and landed this Brown appox 6 lbs. Most driftboats were plug fishing and all had some action.

The water has dropped to a fishable level of 1000 CFS.. Today the driftboats were seen the action pick up over the last week or so. Most were Plug fishing and old man winter just doesn't want to let go. All we need now is some springtime temperatures.

Well right on schedule with the last few years, BIG WATER the first week of April. Just about everything is unfishable at the present time. North, South, and Tribs to the West. Best tip, STAY HOME. Time to tie some flies, Egg sacks or pick some Garden Hackle (Crawlers). Even the guys trying to get out on the Lake to fish for Browns are having trouble due to the winds. Keep checking the waterline and my report page for updates.

Today I fished with a large group, when we pulled into the Altmar lot we ( Guides ) were suprised to see no other boats out. Our goal was to Plug fish. We fished EVERYTHING hard, sitting on anchor over a few high percentage spawning spots to have all 3 boats empty and the RT 2A bridge, So we called it a day at 11:30. Tommorow we are going to try Fishing the lake for Browns as an alternitive. Late today I took a drive around to checkout other options and the creeks are shapeing up great.Beware!! If you are not obeying the 4 foot leader law. DEC are out enforcing it and have been writing tickets.. Also if you are using a Float or a Strike indicator set-up remember this applies to you to. The farthest split shot can only be 4 foot from the Fly or Bait. Best Fly Patterns: Egg patterns, Sucker Spawn tied big, Glo-Bugs, Stoneflies and Buggers. Egg Sack in Blue, Pink and Chartruse. Pink worms, Jigs and Night Crawlers have been working for the Floatfisherman.PLEASE CATCH AND RELEASE FOR FUTURE FISHING.

SURFS UP!!! The river is in good shape after the weekend rain. Orwell and Trout Brook are coming down quickly and the main river has a slight tint to it. Today I fished with John and Chris, we had two bites on plugs today and boated a nice mid teens spawing male. John took this one for the grille. Most all the other boats fishing plugs today had one fish too. Some guys are trying to get out on the lake for browns but the winds have not been cooperating. When they do the boats are getting into 5-6 browns per trip. Beware!!
Date: March 28, 2004 Water Conditions: Colored up.Water Flow: 1750 CFS Water Temperature: 34Fishing Report: SURFS UP!!! Just like the past two years the big water is right on time, the first week in April. The water out of the dam is 1750 CFS, Orwell Creek and Trout Brook are BLOWN over there banks. Once you get down stream of Orwell Mud and Debris play a big problem, above there the water is in really good shape. Most action was by the driftboats backtrolling plugs, which is usually the case in these conditions. While the bank angler is limited, try fishing any current break around the gravel sections of the river. Each day there are more visible redds around, with the high flows the should get more fish on redds.Beware!! If you are not obeying the 4 foot leader law. DEC are out enforcing it and have been writing tickets.. Also if you are using a Float or a Strike indicator set-up remember this applies to you to. The farthest split shot can only be 4 foot from the Fly or Bait.Best Fly Patterns: Egg patterns, Sucker Spawn tied big, Glo-Bugs, Stoneflies and Buggers.Egg Sack in Blue, Pink and Chartruse.PLEASE CATCH AND RELEASE FOR FUTURE FISHING.

Date: March 25, 2004. Water Condition: Clear Water Flow: 900 CFS Water Temperature: 33 Water Hotline Number: 1-800-452-1742 Site Code #365123 Fishing Report: The big water flows the last two years has been the 1st week in April, looks like we'll be right on target. Fishing has been a tough the last overall foremost anglers. Noticed a few more redds each day in the upper section, with no visible fish on them. BEWARE!! If you are not obeying the 4 foot leader law.. DEC and Forest Rangers are out enforcing it and have been writing tickets.. Also if you are using a Float or Strike indicator setup the farthest split shot can only be 4 foot from the fly or bait. The warm sunny days have been getting the stonefly hatch coming off mid day. Most of the winter stones are a size #12-#14. A sparsely tied #10 works best for me. Try mixing in some small amounts of flash and also gray biots. Of course eggs under a float will also be producing a few fish too. Best Fly patterns: Egg patterns, Sucker spawn, Glo-bugs, Stonefly nymph's and Assorted nymph's. Egg Sacks: Chart, Blue, White and Pink. Please practice catch and release for future fishing.
